Give us a call at 212-505-9555. We have technical help service available.
  3. How do I use the demo data that comes with Portfolio Logic™?
Portfolio Logic™ comes with a set of demo data so that you are one mouse click away from seeing how the product can help you without any initial effort. To use this demonstration data, refer to section 1 of the user manual. As described there, you can fill your portfolio with a useful set of demonstration data. Simply click on: help->Initialize portfolio with demo data. You can immediately view the reports and screens available with Portfolio Logic. In order to download prices from the internet, you must sign on to your internet financial information provider and enter the symbols that you wish to price.
  4. I have seen how the demo data works, now I want to put my own symbols in a portfolio. How do I do this?
Go the help menu and click on help->Initialize system with empty portfolio. Any demo data or other portfolio information will now be deleted. There will still be some useful accounts or holdings remaining. You can begin to add your portfolio. You accomplish this in the following three easy steps. 1. Add your brokerage accounts to the system. We suggest that you begin with one account and add others once you are familiar with the technique. Click on transactions->account maintenance 2. Add symbols to your portfolio. We suggest that you add a few symbols until you are more familiar with the technique. You should add symbols to your accounts that enable you to enter cash amounts. To add cash to your accounts, we suggest that you use the symbols CASH or MMKT. For cash entries, enter the total dollar amount in the shares field. Enter a market price of $1. To add symbols, click on: transactions->maintain holdings. 3. Dial up your internet provider and enter the symbols in your portfolio. For America Online users, you should enter shares=1 and Cost=1. You are now ready to use your real data. As you become more familiar with the above technique, you should add more brokerage accounts and holdings.
  5. I already have my own portfolio in Excel or Lotus. Can I use this data, or do I have to enter my portfolio information again?
Portfolio Logic™ can import your existing data. This topic is discussed more fully in section 17 of the user manual. To prepare your existing data for import into Portfolio Logic, you simply export the required fields into a txt file and indicate that you want commas to separate the fields. Portfolio Logic will read this data into your holdings table.
  6. I use a different pricing service other than America Online or Yahoo. How do I import these prices on a regular basis?
We support downloads for the following financial information services providers: America Online Yahoo Intuit Excite Intuit Quicken.com Microsoft Financial Network (MSFN) Quote.com If you want to use a financial information service that is not listed above, please call us. We will upgrade your version of the software at no additional charge.
  7. I love the portfolio management features of Portfolio Logic, but I want to maintain some (or all) of my own market prices manually. How do I do this?
There is a screen for entering your own prices. Click on the Import prices->Manual prices menu item. You simply enter your prices.
  8. I have come to rely on the outstanding portfolio management features of Portfolio Logic, but occasionally my internet service provider is not available or is slow. What do I do then?
We recommend that you have two financial information service providers and that you maintain a list of your symbols in each of them. This way, for example, if AOL is not available, you can use Yahoo. Or conversely, if Yahoo is not available, you can use AOL.
  9. I want to watch specific new stocks, but do not own them yet. Can I include them in my portfolio?
To do this you simply perform the following steps: 1. Add the symbols to the holdings table by clicking on Transactions->Maintain holdings. For the number of shares, enter a zero. Otherwise, the software will multiply your shares times the current market price and will add the resulting dollars to your total portfolio value. We recommend that you establish a special brokerage account for these holdings so that they can be viewed as potential purchases in a group and will not clutter up your live positions. 2. Dial up your internet financial service provider and add the new symbols to your list to be downloaded .
  10. If I enter my open orders, how does this affect my holdings?
The open order feature of the system does not automatically update your holdings. If an open order meets the market price and is executed, you must: Manually delete the record from the open order table, and Enter the new position in your holdings table. The purpose of the open order part of the system is to enable you to maintain control over your open positions.
  11. How do I add money to one of my brokerage accounts?
For example, assume you want to add $3,400 to a cash account that already has $4,000 in it. Novice approach On the Maintain Holdings screen and find the appropriate Cash record to which you wish to add money. You replace the value 4,000 with $7,400. You may, if you wish also add a record to the "to do list". But this is simply a manual reminder that the money was sent to the brokerage account. To do this, click on Other reports->To do Expert approach Portfolio Logic comes initialized with some special symbols that are used to keep track of receipts, disbursements, dividends, interest, etc. For a complete list of these symbols, refer to Appendix B at the back of the user manual. To receive cash, you go the Buy or sell holdings transaction screen and: Open/ close Amount to be added Symbol Comment Open +$3,400 CASH to the Cash symbol Close -$3,400 ZRECEIPTS to the specialized symbol for cash receipts. The holdings data will be automatically increased to $ 7,400 by the program. Using the expert approach will enable you to take advantage of a more effective use of the return on investment features of the system (see section 20 of the user manual).
  12. How do I remove money from my brokerage accounts?
These days, many brokerage accounts including checking privileges and perform many of the same functions as banks. It is common place to remove funds from a brokerage account. 17. What do I do when the symbol of the stock or mutual fund changes?
In late 1997, Westinghouse (WX) changed both its name and its symbol to CBS.(CBS). When this type of change occurs, you must change the symbol on each of the holding records. The program will automatically adjust the shares, cost, and previous market price for all holdings for this symbol. It will then display the newly adjusted shares for all holdings of this particular symbol. Assume we have a 3 for 1 split in the Microsoft stock MSFT where we are holding the 100 shares of stock at a cost of $90 that was selling at a market price of $120. The system will: Increase the shares to 300 Decrease the cost to $30. Change the previous market price to $40.

  21. Can I establish and maintain multiple portfolios?
Portfolio Logic supports multiple portfolios. However, we discourage their use. It is better if you can combine information into one portfolio and organize your holdings into separate accounts. In this way, you can take advantage of the features within portfolio logic that enable you to view your separate accounts together or separate as you wish. Once you separate your portfolios, it is more difficult to view your combined positions across portfolios. We at Business Logic see the primary need for multiple portfolios is for those users who are managing money or investments for others. In this case, multiple portfolios enables you to keep the information for each of your clients totally separate. To learn about how Portfolio Logic handles multiple portfolios, see section 19 of the user manual.
  22. How do I make a backup of my data?
For complete instructions on how to backup your data, refer to section 22 of the user manual. To perform a backup , go to Portfolios->Export.
