How do I register for use of Portfolio Logic? If you do not already
have one, you can give us a call and obtain a user license and registration
number for Portfolio Logic. You can do this over the telephone by credit
card. Refer to the section 11 of the user manual for more information.
- I
have read the manual and still have some questions about use of Portfolio
Logic, what do I do?
Give us a call at 212-505-9555. We have technical help service available.
- How
do I use the demo data that comes with Portfolio Logic?
Portfolio Logic comes with a set of demo data so that you are
one mouse click away from seeing how the product can help you without
any initial effort. To use this demonstration data, refer to section
1 of the user manual. As described there, you can fill your portfolio
with a useful set of demonstration data. Simply click on: help->Initialize
portfolio with demo data. You can immediately view the reports and screens
available with Portfolio Logic. In order to download prices from the
internet, you must sign on to your internet financial information provider
and enter the symbols that you wish to price.
- I
have seen how the demo data works, now I want to put my own symbols
in a portfolio. How do I do this?
Go the help menu and click on help->Initialize system with empty portfolio.
Any demo data or other portfolio information will now be deleted. There
will still be some useful accounts or holdings remaining. You can begin
to add your portfolio. You accomplish this in the following three easy
steps. 1. Add your brokerage accounts to the system. We suggest that
you begin with one account and add others once you are familiar with
the technique. Click on transactions->account maintenance 2. Add symbols
to your portfolio. We suggest that you add a few symbols until you are
more familiar with the technique. You should add symbols to your accounts
that enable you to enter cash amounts. To add cash to your accounts,
we suggest that you use the symbols CASH or MMKT. For cash entries,
enter the total dollar amount in the shares field. Enter a market price
of $1. To add symbols, click on: transactions->maintain holdings. 3.
Dial up your internet provider and enter the symbols in your portfolio.
For America Online users, you should enter shares=1 and Cost=1. You
are now ready to use your real data. As you become more familiar with
the above technique, you should add more brokerage accounts and holdings.
- I
already have my own portfolio in Excel or Lotus. Can I use this data,
or do I have to enter my portfolio information again?
Portfolio Logic can import your existing data. This topic is discussed
more fully in section 17 of the user manual. To prepare your existing
data for import into Portfolio Logic, you simply export the required
fields into a txt file and indicate that you want commas to separate
the fields. Portfolio Logic will read this data into your holdings table.
-
I use a different pricing service other than America Online or Yahoo.
How do I import these prices on a regular basis?
We support downloads for the following financial information services
providers: America Online Yahoo Intuit Excite Intuit Quicken.com Microsoft
Financial Network (MSFN) Quote.com If you want to use a financial information
service that is not listed above, please call us. We will upgrade your
version of the software at no additional charge.
-
I love the portfolio management features of Portfolio Logic, but
I want to maintain some (or all) of my own market prices manually. How
do I do this?
There is a screen for entering your own prices. Click on the Import
prices->Manual prices menu item. You simply enter your prices.
- I
have come to rely on the outstanding portfolio management features of
Portfolio Logic, but occasionally my internet service provider is not
available or is slow. What do I do then?
We recommend that you have two financial information service providers
and that you maintain a list of your symbols in each of them. This way,
for example, if AOL is not available, you can use Yahoo. Or conversely,
if Yahoo is not available, you can use AOL.
-
I want to watch specific new stocks, but do not own them yet. Can
I include them in my portfolio?
To do this you simply perform the following steps: 1. Add the symbols
to the holdings table by clicking on Transactions->Maintain holdings.
For the number of shares, enter a zero. Otherwise, the software will
multiply your shares times the current market price and will add the
resulting dollars to your total portfolio value. We recommend that you
establish a special brokerage account for these holdings so that they
can be viewed as potential purchases in a group and will not clutter
up your live positions. 2. Dial up your internet financial service provider
and add the new symbols to your list to be downloaded .
-
If I enter my open orders, how does this affect my holdings?
The open order feature of the system does not automatically update your
holdings. If an open order meets the market price and is executed, you
must: Manually delete the record from the open order table, and Enter
the new position in your holdings table. The purpose of the open order
part of the system is to enable you to maintain control over your open
positions.
- How
do I add money to one of my brokerage accounts?
For example, assume you want to add $3,400 to a cash account that already
has $4,000 in it. Novice approach On the Maintain Holdings screen and
find the appropriate Cash record to which you wish to add money. You
replace the value 4,000 with $7,400. You may, if you wish also add a
record to the "to do list". But this is simply a manual reminder that
the money was sent to the brokerage account. To do this, click on Other
reports->To do Expert approach Portfolio Logic comes initialized with
some special symbols that are used to keep track of receipts, disbursements,
dividends, interest, etc. For a complete list of these symbols, refer
to Appendix B at the back of the user manual. To receive cash, you go
the Buy or sell holdings transaction screen and: Open/ close Amount
to be added Symbol Comment Open +$3,400 CASH to the Cash symbol Close
-$3,400 ZRECEIPTS to the specialized symbol for cash receipts. The holdings
data will be automatically increased to $ 7,400 by the program. Using
the expert approach will enable you to take advantage of a more effective
use of the return on investment features of the system (see section
20 of the user manual).

How do I remove money from my brokerage accounts?
These days, many brokerage accounts including checking privileges and
perform many of the same functions as banks. It is common place to remove
funds from a brokerage account. Assume you wish to remove $3,500 from
a brokerage account that has a balance of $7,500 in it. Novice approach
Similar to FAQ #11, you use the holdings screen and change the balance
from $7,500 to $4,000. You can also enter a "to do" item if you wish.
Expert approach Again, refer to FAQ #11. You would enter a transaction
as follows: Open/ close Amount to be added Symbol Comment Open +$3,500
ZDISBURSE to the specialized symbol for cash disbursements. Close -$3,500
CASH to the Cash symbol
- How
do I handle interest and dividends?
For interest and dividends, you use a technique similar to cash receipts
described in FAQ #11. Assume one of your brokerage accounts received
$250 in interest or dividends and that the balance in the account were
$1,200 before the interest or dividends. Novice approach Similar to
FAQ #11, you use the holdings screen and change the CASH balance from
$1,200 to $250. You can also enter a "to do" item if you wish. Expert
approach Again, refer to FAQ #11. You would enter a transaction as follows:
Open/ close Amount to be added Symbol Comment Close -$250 ZINTEREST
or ZDIVIDEND to the specialized symbol for interest or dividends Open
+$250 CASH to the Cash symbol
- How
do I add a new symbol to the security master?
When you add a new symbol and description to the Maintain Holdings screen,
it is automatically added to the security master table. Similarly, to
change a symbol or description in the security master, simply change
them in the holdings table. The security master will be updated automatically.
- How
do I add a new symbol to the holdings table?
You simply click on the transactions->maintain holdings menu option.
Then do the following: 1. Click on the Add New button. You will see
the holdings form that contains no data. 2. Enter your new symbol information
along with your account, cost, lot, purchase date, etc.
-
What do I do when the name of a stock changes, but the symbol remains
the same?
On the holdings maintenance screen, go to any of the holdings records
for this stock . Change the name of the symbol. This change will be
reflected in the security master and will appear on all other holdings
for this symbol.
- What
do I do when the symbol of the stock or mutual fund changes?
In late 1997, Westinghouse (WX) changed both its name and its symbol
to CBS.(CBS). When this type of change occurs, you must change the symbol
on each of the holding records. To do this, novices and experts alike
must do the following: 1. Click on Transactions->Maintain holdings 2.
Use the holdings maintenance screen to find one of the WX records. 3.
Click on the radio button for Spreadsheet view->symbol. This screen
will show all holdings for WX. 4. Change the symbol for each holding
on this screen from WX to CBS. 5. You must also, of course, dial up
your internet service and make the appropriate change.
- What
do I do when a stock splits?
Proceed to the holdings screen as in FAQ #17. There is a perform split
button on the top of the screen. You should do the following: a. Use
the maintain holdings screen to find a particular holding that needs
to reflect a stock split. Even if you own the holding in several accounts,
you need to highlight only one holding record. c. Click on the perform
split button. A split screen will appear and you will enter your split
ratio. d. You enter your split ratio and click on the perform split
button. e. The program will automatically adjust the shares, cost, and
previous market price for all holdings for this symbol. It will then
display the newly adjusted shares for all holdings of this particular
symbol. Assume we have a 3 for 1 split in the Microsoft stock MSFT where
we are holding the 100 shares of stock at a cost of $90 that was selling
at a market price of $120. The system will: Increase the shares to 300
Decrease the cost to $30. Change the previous market price to $40.
- How
do I buy stock?
Assume that you buy 100 shares of IBM at $102 with a commission of $40.
The total cost of the purchase is $10,240. Assume that the cash balance
in this account is $20,000. Novice approach This activity is similar
to that described in FAQ #11, where you made the change using the Maintain
holdings screen. You create a new holdings record for IBM in the appropriate
account. You enter the cost, shares, price, etc. You then must replace
the $20,000 with $9,760, the new cash balance in the CASH symbol in
this account. Expert approach Again, similar to FAQ #11, you will use
the Buy sell transaction screen to enter this data. You will create
a transaction as follows: Open/ close Amount to be added Symbol Comment
Close $10,240 IBM Open -10,240 CASH The balances in the holdings table
will be calculated and updated automatically.
- How
do I sell stock?
This is similar to FAQ #19. Open/ close Amount to be added Symbol Comment
Close $-10,240 IBM Open $+10,240 CASH
- Can
I establish and maintain multiple portfolios?
Portfolio Logic supports multiple portfolios. However, we discourage
their use. It is better if you can combine information into one portfolio
and organize your holdings into separate accounts. In this way, you
can take advantage of the features within portfolio logic that enable
you to view your separate accounts together or separate as you wish.
Once you separate your portfolios, it is more difficult to view your
combined positions across portfolios. We at Business Logic see the primary
need for multiple portfolios is for those users who are managing money
or investments for others. In this case, multiple portfolios enables
you to keep the information for each of your clients totally separate.
To learn about how Portfolio Logic handles multiple portfolios, see
section 19 of the user manual.
- How
do I make a backup of my data?
For complete instructions on how to backup your data, refer to section
22 of the user manual. To perform a backup , go to Portfolios->Export.
